Prizes

When the final float passes by, the villagers and merpeople erupt in applause. Bella, Keira, and I jump to our feet and cheer.

After the clapping and cheering stop, Keira suggests, “Let’s play some games while the rides are being set up.”

I glance around the beach. It’s packed with people and game booths. There’s definitely no room for rides here. “Are the rides in the village?” I ask Keira.

“Nope,” Keira answers. “The rides will be over there.” She points in the direction of the water.

The only thing I see in the water are mermaids and mermen. I must have misunderstood Keira. “Did you say the rides are in the water?” I ask.

Keira smiles and nods. “Everyone helps with the Fall Festival. My family hosts the carving contest. The fairies put on the parade. The villagers are in charge of games, and the merpeople run the rides.”

I take a closer look at the water. In addition to merpeople, I now see dolphins, fish, and . . . whales? “Are those whales?” I ask in disbelief.

Keira laughs, “Yes, those are whales. They’re here for The Great Whale Exhale.”

“What does exhale mean?” Bella asks.

“When you breathe out, you exhale,” I explain.

“I have no idea what The Great Whale Exhale is, but I’m definitely trying it,” Bella says.

“Me too!” I add.

“The rides won’t be ready for a while,” Keira informs us, “so we might as well play some games.”

The three of us walk over to the nearest booth. Hanging from the ceiling of the booth are stuffed fairies in every colour of the rainbow. On the ground are at least 200 bottles. Most of the bottles are clear, but a few of them are red.

A friendly lady hands each of us three rings. “If a ring goes around a red bottle, you win a prize,” she informs us.

Bella and I let Keira go first. Her first two rings land on clear bottles. Her final ring touches a red bottle, but bounces off and falls to the ground.

“That was really close,” I tell Keira.

“I hope you two have better luck,” Keira says.

I go next and aim at the closest red bottle. Unfortunately, each ring I throw bounces off the red bottle and lands on a clear bottle.

Bella steps up to take her turn.

“If anyone can do it, you can, Bella,” I say encouragingly.

Bella tosses her first ring. It completely misses and lands on the sand. When her second ring goes around a red bottle, Bella pumps her fist and cries, “Yes!”

“You did it!” Keira cries excitedly. “You really did it!”

“Well done, Bella!” I add.

Bella aims and throws her final ring. The ring lands on another red bottle!

“Wow, Bella, you’re amazing at this game!” I hear Amelia say. The three of us spin around to find Amelia and Brynn watching us.

“Bella’s great at throwing games,” I say proudly.

Bella flashes me a grin.

“You can choose two prizes,” the lady running the game informs Bella.

Bella chooses a blue fairy and a purple fairy. She gives the fairies to Brynn and Amelia.
